Discrimination in the Legal Profession
The Federation of Law Societies has expanded its Model Code of Professional Conduct rules on discrimination, harassment and bullying. The LSY Executive announced May 17, 2023 it will be voting on July 24, 2023 to incorporate the changes into the Yukon’s Code of Conduct.
In this event, presenters Birju Dattani and Lesley McCullough will take us through the proposed changes and discuss how discrimination, harassment and bullying impact the legal profession.
Birju Dattani – Director of the Yukon Human Rights Commission
Originally from Calgary, Alberta, Birju has extensive academic and practical experience in the field of human rights. He was awarded an LL.B. (with Honours) by the University of Wales in Aberstwyth, a Post Graduate Diploma in Professional Legal Skills by the City University of London and an LL.M. in Public International Law by the London School of Economics and Political Science. In addition, Birju has spent time studying at the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn, Cambridge University and the School of Oriental and African Studies.
Birju’s previous professional experience include serving as Assistant Regional Director with Alberta Human Rights Commission and Teaching Fellow in the faculty of law at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. The son of refugees from Uganda, Birju has a life-long commitment to advancing the cause of human rights.
Lesley McCullough – Staff Lawyer – Workplace Sexual Harassment Clinic Whitehorse
Lesley has practiced as a lawyer in Yukon for almost four decades. The great majority of her career was with the Government of Yukon where she was, amongst other things, counsel on and a negotiator of aboriginal land claims agreements, Director of Intergovernmental Affairs, and Deputy Minister of Justice. She has also been the Acting Director of the Yukon Human Rights Commission. She has extensive experience in real property and Aboriginal and human rights law. Lesley presently operates a public clinic providing free and confidential legal advice to persons in Yukon dealing with workplace sexual harassment issues.
This CPD has been approved for 1.5 hours by the Law Society of British Columbia and may be applied towards the mandatory 12 hour Continuing Professional Development requirement in both BC and Yukon.
