Description: Find out how small firms can put critical planning in place to efficiently handle planned and unplanned interruptions to their practice. Donna Moore, Practice Management Counsel with the Law Society of Alberta and Eleanor Platt, Custodianship Counsel with the Law Society of Alberta, will provide essential tips on what considerations should be made when creating a contingency plan. They will also share their observations and experience on what can be done to wind up a practice when no such planning is done in advance.
Presenters:
Donna Moore is Legal Counsel with the Practice Management Department at the Law Society of Alberta. She completed her law and graduate degrees at the University of Saskatchewan. She then articled and practiced in Saskatchewan, primarily in the North, with a focus on litigation, family and criminal law. She relocated to Alberta and practiced with boutique litigation firms advocating for predominantly Indigenous clientele. In 2014, Donna transitioned to her current role where she engages with lawyers to provide support, resources and consultations/assessments of their practice. Donna enjoys theatre, exploring local farmers’ markets and snowshoeing in the Rockies. But her real love is travel, having lived and worked in Central America and Africa, and she can’t wait to re-engage that passion. She has two incredible children, 3 brilliant grandsons and a tiny dog (who rules her life).
Eleanor Platt is Custodianship Counsel for the Law Society of Alberta. In that role, she oversees all custodianships over lawyers’ practices in Alberta. Eleanor was the first articling student to article at the Law Society of Alberta. She became Custodianship Counsel after her bar call in 2019. Prior to joining the Law Society, Eleanor completed her LLB and LLM in England. She worked in Human Resources then completed the NCA process. In her spare time, Eleanor enjoys singing, hiking and yoga.
